Lincoln Memorial
The National Mall is truly impressive planned with great vision. At the west end is the Lincoln Memorial and at the east end is the Capitol Building. In between a further myriad of important buildings. We managed to see neither of the two this time - I have it on my schedule to return in the summer time and luxuriate in the green foliage and catch up with all that we missed this time around.

The Washington Monument
This is an absolutely awesome obelisk dedicated to George Washington on the west end of the National Mall made of marble, granite and sandstone. It belies the fact that you can get inside, ride up to the top in an elevator and from the two tiny squares at the bottom of the pyramid, look out and see the world below you. We saw a crowd of people, as we waded through the canadian invasion of geese, up near the base of the monument. It turns out they are waiting for the ride up to see the view. We had to relinquish Marek's pen knife, it could not be "looked after" by the staff, but there was the suggestion that it could be tucked under the garbage bin "over there". Sure enough, when we got back it was still there, together with a whole load of others. Security is tight, no gum, no drinks, no food, "this place is sacred". No knives, no glass, no stuff that could threaten peace. When we got to the top, it was simply a delight to see Washington DC laid out below us.

Magnificient Winter Trees
I've just loved being here right now with the trees showing their true form, reminding me of bronchial tree of our lungs, permeating to the fragile and outer extremes, providing oxygen just as trees do.
Marek at the White House
Finally here. I first wanted to visit this place when, as a student, I would watch news footage of the anti-Vietnam war protests. Great to be here ahead of Hu Jintao, though he gets to go inside to-morrow.

We've been so excited to see the White House. The walk from the Hyatt is literally 10 minutes away. The weather has been superb, we could not have wished for better. Crisp and chilly, it's been invigorating and fun, but I am glad I've got on my merino scarf!
